The second Gunnar surfaced, he blinked the scorching water from his eyes in time to see Noreen slide over the edge where the water fell into the next pool. No time to curse, he followed. He was in the pool barely long enough to appreciate the slightly cooler temperature before he followed her over the edge to the next pool. Five levels down he caught up with her in the lowest pool in an area other patrons had cleared for them. As his head broke the surface he watched her swim to, then rise from, the knee deep water and shake out her hair, which had lost the tie holding it in its braid.

If he hadn’t seen it for himself, he wouldn’t have believed it later.

A beam of light shone down from the roof of the cavern, like a spotlight, surrounding her. She raised her face to the source and he stood from the water to join her.

“Look.” She pointed, as she gripped his shoulder to maintain her balance. “Where do you think the light is coming from? It’s the middle of the night for crying out loud.”

When he didn’t answer, she looked at him, her eyes crinkled in puzzlement. “Are you okay? Was the water too hot for you?”

“No. It was too hot for you! I should tan your hide for that.” Something was very different. “Your hair…and skin…” How could that be?

“What?”

He drew a handful of hair over her shoulder and held it in the light bathing them. It was white blonde. The color of Nordia. White blonde, but not white, it looked as if threads of sparkling gold were woven throughout. With his other hand, he reached for hers and held it against his chest. She was as pale as he was, her skin a milky white, smooth as silky satin, that glowed in the surreal light.

Stunned speechless, he wasn’t prepared when she stamped her foot and yelled at the ceiling. “Odin! Freya! Make them stop messing with me!”

Echoing through the cavern, a manly gasp was followed by a long, soul-suffering sigh of the variety only a woman could produce.

“I told you,” a dulcet tone filled the grotta, “didn’t I? I told you not to mess with a woman’s appearance.” The voice sighed again. “I’m sorry, my precious Noreen. He really does have a point. Now listen closely.”

Gunnar watched as Noreen glared at the source of the light with her lips pursed as if holding back a barrage of scoldings.

“Ahem!” The deep throat was cleared before the ringing tones of Thor’s Hammer shook the very roots of the planet.

“We got the hammer thing already,” Noreen shouted at the ceiling. “Stop knocking down poor innocent people and get to the point, would you?”

“Silence!”

Gunnar resisted the urge to drop to his knees when his little flower of a woman crossed her arms under her breasts and thrust out a hip, still glaring up.

“Oh for Loki’s sake, how I am supposed to make a world-shaking pronouncement when she’s got those things pointing at me?” the male voice muttered, then grunted.

Judging by Noreen’s wicked grin, Gunnar guessed the god was talking about her nipples, and that Freya had most likely elbowed Odin in the ribs.

“People of Nordia, your True Princess has returned. She has been claimed by her True Mate, the man you know as the Duke of Nordenskiold, Gunnar Zaren. The two of them have joined in a union which cannot be rent asunder. Already from this union, Princess Noreen carries the next male heir. And a few others.”

“What?” she shrieked.

“Quiet you. You may be The Promised One, but that doesn’t give you the right to sass me. Oh, and no more hot pools for you.”

“Get back to the subject, please,” the softer voice interrupted.

“Right. In three weeks’ time, on the Winter Solstice, all Nordia will be tested. The nobility is to gather in Ryadstholm. There you will be guided by your King, Princess, and her husband, the new Prince of Nordia. Those not of the nobility will also be needed on this day, and your leaders expect you to tune in to the world-wide communications systems already in place. They will tell you what is required of you. Every soul will be needed. Do not fail your gods or your leaders.”

A deep silence fell on the caverns, broken only by the sound of falling water.

Noreen cleared her throat and continued to squint up into the light.

“Yes, Princess?” Odin inquired.

“Is that all?”

“It will do for now.”

“Then do you mind killing the light?”

“Ah, sorry, I was just verifying the number of fetuses.”

“And?”

“Privileged information,” the voice chuckled. “That is all, you may return to your activities.”

The light went out and Gunnar watched as his very proper princess-wife stuck her tongue out at the ceiling.

Thor’s hammer rang out, and as it faded, a deep chuckle echoed in the cavern.
